Two ways to build with steel
Cold-formed steel and red-iron pre-engineered metal buildings both offer practical solutions, but use different structural systems. Your intended use, dimensions, and local design loads help determine which is suitable.
Understanding cold-formed steel
Cold-formed members are shaped from steel sheet into engineered profiles. These systems can be a good fit for many garages, workshops, and smaller storage buildings.
Do not assume that lighter individual members mean a less capable building. The complete engineered system and its specified loads are what matter.
Understanding red-iron buildings
Red-iron systems commonly use substantial structural frames, often with I-shaped columns and rafters. These pre-engineered metal buildings are frequently considered for larger spans and commercial or agricultural applications.
Span, frame spacing, openings, and loads all affect the final design. A supplier should confirm what each package can accommodate.
Choose for your application
Compare engineered performance, interior clearance, erection requirements, and total project scope rather than selecting on the system name alone.
- What clear span does your layout require?
- Which local wind and snow loads apply?
- What equipment and door clearances do you need?
- Who will install the building?
